MEET JOHN
John Russell has spent more than 21 years practicing law in West Alabama, serving as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney. He’s handled thousands of cases—from criminal and civil matters to family and probate court—always with a focus on fairness, integrity, and respect for the law.
The Pickens County native has deep roots in the community and the county bar. His father opened a law practice in Aliceville in 1978, and John joined the practice in 2004. Throughout his career, John has effectively served the public in all courts the Pickens County District Judge presides over. This valuable experience has equipped him with a keen understanding of the responsibilities this position carries, as well as the knowledge and skills necessary to serve in such a capacity.
Outside the years he spent pursuing his education, John has lived in Pickens County his entire life. For John, Pickens County isn’t just a place of work—it’s where he grew up, where he built a life, raised a family, and made lasting relationships. He is married to Kelly Mayfield Russell, also a Pickens County native, and they have three sons: Rainer (17), Reece (14), and Walt (12). John is an active member and a Deacon for Aliceville First Baptist Church.

“Pickens County is home, and it would be an honor to serve the people of this community from the bench. I’m deeply grateful for the support I’ve received since announcing my candidacy, and I look forward to earning your vote for District Judge.” - John Russell
